Electromagnetic compatibility testing is the criterion for evaluating product quality

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) refers to the ability of electrical equipment or system to operate without interference or resistance to electromagnetic environment interference. EMC test is one of the important standards to evaluate the quality of products. In order to ensure the EMC quality of products in the most economical way, appropriate measures should be taken at the early stage of product design.

By definition, EMC is divided into electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic immunity or sensitivity (EMS). The regulation stipulates that the maximum value of EMI and the minimum value of EMS shall be met. The available limits, measurement methods and instruments are specified in relevant standards.

  In order to prove compliance with relevant EMC standards, all electrical equipment must be provided with relevant identification. For example, the CE conformity mark in the whole European Economic Area.


EMI measurement

In the field of electromagnetic interference measurement, in the commercial field, radio receivers or television viewers and other interference receivers are always replaced by measuring instruments. Therefore, all commercial EMI measurement receivers should have a built-in response similar to that of people: they must be equipped with quasi-peak detectors to display people's perception of interference, and take this perception as the measurement value. For interference measurement above 1GHz, peak, CISPR-AV and RMS-AV weighting shall be used.

In the military field, the jamming receiving device is required to respond to the maximum jamming signal. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the peak value of the interference signal.

Because the equipment under test emits interference signals through various coupling modes, the EMC standard has made relevant provisions on the coupling mode of the test receiver and the equipment under test, the environment of the EUT and its operation.


EMS test

In the measurement of electromagnetic sensitivity, the corresponding signal generator is used to replace the actual various interference signal sources, and the signal generated by the signal generator is applied to the equipment under test through the appropriate coupling/decoupling network.

In order to monitor whether the EUT function is normal, appropriate monitoring equipment is required, which is not specified in relevant EMC standards at present. So in mosttead. cases, we have to use highly shielded cameras and monitors instead.


EMC measurement software

The repeatability of EMC measurement can only be achieved if the measuring instruments and methods used strictly comply with relevant rules and standards. For EMC measurement under computer control, two different software tools can be used. They allow full automatic measurement without using an external controller, which is very time-saving, and therefore can realize a very compact test device.
