Scope and method of application of lightning surge test device

CE This is a safety certification standard that is considered a passport for manufacturers to open and enter the European market. Starting from January 2, 2013, all electronic and electrical products entering the European market should be labeled with the CE Electromagnetic Compatibility Mark (EMC). Testing is one of the certification tests in CE certification. EMC tests include radiated interference (EMI), electrostatic discharge interference (ESD), electrical fast transient burst immunity (EFT), voltage drop interference (CSS), lightning surge interference (SG). This article mainly discusses lightning surge testing.


Test method:

The causes of lightning surge are switching transients and lightning transients in the power system; The purpose of the surge immunity test is to establish a common benchmark to evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic equipment during surges (impacts). According to the general requirements of the standard IEC61000-4-5 surge impact immunity test, the lightning surge generator simulates a 1.2/50us voltage waveform, an 8/20us 10/7000 current waveform, and a combined waveform (us, 5/320us). The purpose of the experiment is to couple the waveform into the measurement circuit through a coupling network. According to the severity of the voltage, the experimental levels are divided into 1, 2, 3, 4, and X, where X and are open levels. The corresponding voltage strengths for each level are shown in Table 1. The application scope of the severity level depends on the environment (where surge may occur) and installation conditions, and is generally classified according to the following conditions:

Level 1: The plant or power station control room has good environmental protection.

Level 2: The environment is protected to a certain extent, such as no strong interference from the factory.

Level 3: Common electromagnetic interference environment, with no special installation requirements for equipment such as cable networks, industrial workplaces, and substations.

Level 4: Environments subject to severe disturbances, such as civil overhead lines, unprotected high-voltage substations.

Grade X: Special grade, determined through consultation between the user and the manufacturer. The specific level of product selection is generally determined by product standards.

Experimental results:

The lightning surge test is a destructive test. According to the degree of damage of the object under test, there are several situations:

a) Temporary loss or degradation of function or performance, but it can recover automatically after the disturbance stops without operator intervention;

b) Normal performance within the limits specified by the manufacturer, principal, or buyer

c) Unrecoverable loss of functionality or performance degradation due to device hardware or software damage or data loss.

d) Temporarily losing or reducing function or performance, but requiring operator intervention to recover;


Scope of application:

According to the latest Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2004/108/EC, household radio and television receivers, mobile radio equipment, medical and scientific equipment, household appliances and electronic equipment, teaching electronic equipment, radio broadcast and television transmission equipment, industrial manufacturing equipment, mobile radio communication and commercial radio equipment, information technology equipment, aviation and navigation radio equipment, communication network equipment and instruments Electronic and electrical products such as general lamps and fluorescent lamps require surge immunity testing. In combination with the lighting industry, the following surge immunity test standards for lighting products are proposed in the standard EN61547 General Lighting Equipment. EMC Immunity Clause 5.7:
